Get Inspired at Bagaduce Music
Saturday, April 26, Bagaduce Music – Blue Hill: 1p WORKSHOP. Join us for a special “Creole Jazz Fusion” Workshop with drummer Paul July Joseph and trumpeter/composer Mark Tipton at Bagaduce Music! This hands-on event will immerse you in the rich sounds of Creole jazz fusion, which blends Haitian folk styles such as Yanvalou, Congo, Ibo, Kompa, and Zouk with jazz. 
 
This workshop is open to absolutely everyone!  Paul will demonstrate different rhythmic styles, and ask for volunteers to come up and join him. Anyone can participate! He’ll have some hand percussion instruments with him for folks to use, and if we run out of instruments, people can clap their hands. Participants should not plan to bring their own instruments (unless they’re hand-drummers).

Saturday, April 26, TunkJoy Bakery – Steuben: 7p CONCERT. The Minor Characters & The Mark Tipton Jazz Quartet join forces for a rousing concert at TunkJoy Bakery in Steuben. 
 
Minor Characters are highly regarded for their lively Roma and Django style jazz tunes and songs, playing rousing sets around DownEast, Maine. Minor Characters features Sheila Unvala, fiddle; Sepp Huber, Accordion; Robert Sanchez, guitar; Heron Weston, bass; Jenny Penny, drums. 
Mark Tipton Jazz Quartet This Boston based quartet met during their studies at the New England Conservatory of Music. They are arranged with Mark Tipton (returning to his home state of Maine!) on trumpet, Kai Lance on guitar, Danial Mayer on bass, and Paul July Joseph on drums. The quartet will be playing material ranging from jazz arrangements of folk music to original compositions to jazz standards drawing on many styles of music from New Orleans jazz to progressive jazz, and from folk music to experimental music.

Mark Tipton
Trumpeter/Composer/Educator Mark Tipton is a Maine native who has lived and worked in New York City, Los Angeles, and Boston. He is currently the Lead Instructor for Jazz and Contemporary Musical Arts at the Walnut Hill School for the Arts in Natick (MA), and a Doctoral Fellow at the New England Conservatory of Music. He has studied privately with Jason Palmer, Jerry Bergonzi, John McNeil, Billy Hart, Joe Morris, and Ken Schaphorst, and has recently performed and/or recorded with Dave Holland, Ran Blake, Michael Formanek, Jason Moran, Anna Webber, Don Byron, Seulah Noh, and Tom Varner. His works include jazz compositions, contemporary chamber works, multi-disciplinary installations, and silent film scores, (including The Cabinet of Dr. CaligariNosferatuThe GeneralMetropolisSunriseThe Passion of Joan of Arc, and others). This summer he will be touring Turkey, Cyprus, and Europe with Grammy-nominated jazz pianist/composer Mehmet Sanlikol. His new album of original jazz compositions for instrumental octet and vocalists, Vernacular Stretch, will be released this Spring.
Daniel Mayer
Daniel Mayer is an American bassist and guitarist originally from Bernardsville, New Jersey. While initially starting out on the guitar at the age of nine, he eventually fell in love with the bass and resolved to move forward with both instruments. After earning his B.A. from Bowdoin College, Daniel went on to be awarded the Dean’s Scholarship to complete his M.M. at the New England Conservatory, where he had the privilege of studying with Cecil McBee, Frank Carlberg, and Jason Moran. A distinctive emerging artist of his generation, Daniel has gone on to perform internationally at renowned venues such as the Panama Jazz Festival, Jordan Hall, and Regattabar. He leads the band Cartographs alongside pianist George Maclaurin and drummer Carlo Kind. In addition to his work as a leader, Daniel has also performed with Nat Adderley Jr., Nasheet Waits, Mark Tipton, José Soto, and Fortuno.
Kai Lance
Kai Lance is a guitarist, composer, and teacher with a deep love for the jazz tradition, American roots, and groove music. Kai grew up in rural North Carolina, where he got the opportunity to be immersed in a very rich & diverse music community from a young age, playing at venues such as Bond Brothers Eastside, Sharp 9 Gallery, and Shakori Hills. Kai is currently a student at the New England Conservatory of Music, where he has studied with Nasheet Waits, Frank Carlberg, and Jerry Bergonzi, among others. Kai can be found playing around the northeast, with his own groups as well as the Mark Tipton Quartet, Bruno Bruni, and others.
Paul July Joseph
Drummer Paul July Joseph is from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and is currently studying Contemporary Musical Arts at the New England Conservatory of Music. He recently won a major award from the Percussive Arts Society, and has competed in Drumfest, Le Batteur, and Drum-Off Global. He has worked with Silkroad’s Global Musician Workshop, has performed at the Panama Jazz Festival, and recently joined Akili Jamal Haynes and World of Chibuzo for a performance at Carnegie Hall, sponsored by the United Nations. His drum teachers have included Prosper Prevoit, Austin MacMahon, and Obed Calvaire. Paul is currently working on a project, Creole Jazz Fusion, which blends Haitian folk styles such as Yanvalou, Congo, Ibo, Kompa, and Zouk with jazz. Paul July Joseph plays with several ensembles in Boston, including a gospel ensemble, Anthony Coleman’s Early Jazz Ensemble at NEC, and the Mark Tipton Quartet.

Announcing our 2025 Camps + Events!

Bagaduce Music’s 2025 schedule of events and camps showcases an explosion of creativity and energy. The 40-year-old Blue Hill-based organization will present genres ranging from Bluegrass to Jazz, Classical to Klezmer, and Quebecois to Scandinavian in locations stretching from Steuben to Freeport and many towns in between.

According to executive director Bennett Konesni, “When neighbors meet to enjoy live music – whether singing, dancing, or simply taking it all in – they build strong, resilient communities that work and play nice together.”

Camp registration and details are available now, while event tickets will be on sale as the year progresses.

Time Travel to Tin Pan Alley presents a fascinating docu-concert celebrating the Great American Songbook in Steuben, Searsport, and Blue Hill.  

March 9, 10, and 11: FRIGG, the sensational Nordic String Quartet, returns for popular concerts and workshops at three venues! 

FRIGG has been conquering the world with a fusion of western folk music styles leaning strongly towards Nordic folk music, for which the world music media has coined the term nordgrass, referring to the bluegrass influences of the group. The tight interplay of four violins, string instruments and contrabass, fine-tuned to perfection and spiced with sparkling, humorous live-energy has made an impact on listeners all over the world.

May 2 and 3: NEIL PEARLMAN and GIOVANI KIYINGI present Celtic and Ugandan electric and folk traditions in Blue Hill and Brooks.

June 26 and 17: MR. SUN Bluegrass Weekend features jaw-dropping instrumental prowess in two concerts and a workshop in Blue Hill and Unity.

Highlight Event: A special fundraising dinner at Tinder Hearth in Brooksville on July 24, featuring members of the Boston-based chamber orchestra, A Far Cry.

September 5, 6, and 7: GENTICORUM offers exuberant Quebecois song and dance music from foremost tradition-bearers. Concerts and workshops in Belfast, Unity, and Blue Hill, presented cooperatively with Belfast Flying Shoes.

September 20 and 21: EZEKIEL’S WHEELS returns by popular demand for a weekend of Klezmer workshops and a concert in Northeast Harbor and Belfast.
