2009 Young Composers Festival Held April 25 The 13th annual Young Composers' Festival, sponsored by the Bagaduce Music Lending Library, was held on Saturday, April 25 in Emlen Hall at The Bay School in Blue Hill, Maine. Fifteen students and their families from as far away as Portland and as nearby as Castine attended this annual event.
Twenty-five students from throughout the state of Maine submitted their original compositions for judging by two esteemed professional musicians: George Emlen, Director of the Boston Revels and Fred Goldrich, Director of the Bangor Band and Musical Director of the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Hancock County.
In Category I: Young Composers Through Age 13, 1st place went to Christopher Staknys of Falmouth for his lively piano piece "The Dirty Dish Rag"; 2nd place was awarded to Eleanor Rich of Edgecomb for her composition "Midnight Dream"; 3rd place was given to Evan Moore of Portland for his piano piece "Dog Games".
In Category II: Young Composers Age 14 Through High School, 1st place was awarded to David Manduca of Monmouth, who wrote "A Beginning" for cello, trombone and bassoon; 2nd place went to Ryan Brown of Rome for his vocal duet "Ave Maria"; 3rd place was given to Samuel Bagala of Gray for his piano piece "Nocturne in A Minor".
After a welcome by music library executive director Sean Schmeits, John Cooper, Professor of Muisc and Composer in Residence at College of the Atlantic, shared his expertise with the students. Afterwards, the students took the stage, performing their original pieces. Winners were awarded cash prizes of $200, $125 and $75. |
