2008 Young Composers Festival Held May 26
The 2008 Young Composers Festival was held on Saturday, May 26 in Emlen Hall at the Bay School in Blue Hill. Twenty-two students and their families from as far away as Yarmouth and as nearby as Blue Hill attended this 12th annual event. Corporate sponsor for the 2008 Young Composers Festival was Maine Bank & Trust.

After a welcome by Bagaduce Music Lending Library executive director Susan Theriot and remarks by music director Mary Cheyney Gould, the chairman of the education committee, Alton Downer, presented certificates to the young composers and announced the winners of the 2008 Young Composers Festival. The internationally known folk singer Noel Paul Stookey then gave an inspiring talk about the creative process of composition, which the audience received by giving him a standing ovation.

Of the 43 students from throughout the state of Maine who entered original compositions for the fesitval, 8 were given awards. In Category I: Young Composers Through Age 13, 1st place went to Nathan Hillman of Monroe for his string quartet entitled "Irresistible Invention"; 2nd place was awarded to Eleanor Rich of Edgecomb for her composigion "The Inside Truth" for voice and piano; 3rd place was given to Richard Scheno of Mount Vernon for his piece "Pulchriture" for flute, oboe, trumpet, clarinet and bassoon; and honorable mention was awarded to John Secunde of Limerick for "The Rightboro Musicians", which was written for four saxophones.

In Category II: Young Composers Ages 14-19, 1st place was awarded to Mathias Reed of Castine, who wrote a piece for cello and piano called "Lamente"; 2nd place went to Abraham Ross of Holden for his string quartet "Multiplex Countermeasure"; 3rd place was given to Colby Michaud of Sabattus for his composition "Saddened Rage" for piano; and honorable mention went to Billy Dietz of Yarmouth for his brass quintet entitled "Space Ranger".
